Women on the Rise

For this blog I would like to highlight some historical events that concern women.These events are important because women have went through so much to get where they are today and if it wasn't for some of these events we would still live in a world where we are inferior to men.I am really glad that women stood up for their rights and knew to “Remember, no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt If women let continued to let males bronchitis that took away their voice we would still live in times where women were nothing more than housewives.Now I would like to introduce a few feats in women's history.

  • 1867 The London Society for Women’s Suffrage is formed to campaign for female suffrage.--If this didn't occur it would still be impossible for women in London to vote and help make a difference in their nation

  • 1870 The Married Women’s Property Act allows married women to own their own property. Previously, when women married, their property transferred to their husbands. Divorce heavily favoured men, allowing property to remain in their possession. This act allows women to keep their property, married, divorced, single or widowed.---It's a good thing this occurred because it is entirely unjust for women to be left with nothing.

  • 1907 Under the Qualification of Women Act, women can be elected onto borough and county councils and can also be elected mayor.---Now women can finally have a chance to have a say in how the politics are handled.

  • 1918 Constance Markiewicz becomes the first woman elected to Westminster, representing Sinn Féin. She became involved in radical politics through the suffragette and Irish national movement. She is elected for constituency of Dublin St. Patrick’s as one of 73 Sinn Féin MPs, but, following the line of Sinn Féin politics, declines the position while in prison.

  • 1928 All women in Britain gain equal voting rights with men.--women in Britain are now equal to the men.
Thanks to these events women have been able to escape the shadow that men hid them in.We are now able to vote, own and buy property as well as take part in politics. We are now more than birth givers and housewives, we are an equal part of the world along side men. I am very glad that those women stepped up and said enough is enough and fought for our rights.

Where's the Harm?

  Recently, Colorado 64 amendment passed, as well as Initiative 502 in Washington. Both legalized the possession of marijuana for adults age 21 and older. Many people believe that it should be prohibited and find it dangerous when honestly it does more harm than good. Prohibition is becoming a thing of the past and we see how well the alcohol prohibition worked out. People are most likely against Marijuana because they don’t know or understand the facts about it. If they were more enlightened their perspective would possibly change.

 To begin with “marijuana prohibition enforcement costs the government 13.7 billion dollars annually, and puts well over 500,000 people in jail every year “This is wasting money that could be used to benefit America rather than burden it. The Colorado 64 is a perfect example of how marijuana can be a great benefit to America. For example, “Marijuana legalization would produce hundreds of new jobs, raise millions for the construction of Colorado public schools and raise around $60 million annually in combined savings and revenue for Colorado's budget” Where is the harm in that? America is already in debt and going through a recession so what good is it to turn down an opportunity to help us escape from the firm grasp of debt. It’s entirely illogical to refuse the help marijuana provides America.

In addition, “Every objective study on marijuana has concluded that it is far safer than alcohol and cigarettes for the consumer and the surrounding community.” So it’s not like it’s any worse than the drugs that are already legal. As a matter of fact “Alcohol and tobacco are more toxic, more addictive, and more harmful to the body than marijuana” and are also “more likely to result in injuries and lead to interpersonal violence.” Also, I doubt if you’re having health issues I doubt they will hand you a pack a cigarettes and a case of beer to cure you.

As the generation moves on I believe we should get rid of old ways and open up to new ideas. New ideas lead to new possibility but that will never be accomplished if marijuana continues to remain illegal.

The Cost of Beauty

Today's society is now more shallow than it has ever been,numerous people are trying to live up to the medias perception of how they should look and they don't care about the cost they have to pay.Americans spend around 10 billion on cosmetic procedures a year!What ever happend to "Beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical." (Loren) People don't appreciate inner beauty anymore its all about the physical appearence and half of the time they change their physical appearence to please others  & not for themselves.The most woebegone fact of it all is when people go to the extreme of getting bootleg plastic surgery which has many fatal risk.
They dont care how its being injected,sawed punctured or stitched as long as they get the job done;a body is an temple and they treat it like a dumpster.

I wish that people wouldn't go to extremes like plastic surgery or black market surgery,because in most cases it isnt needed.They do it for the wrong reasons and risk their lives.some of the risk include

  • excessive or unexpected bleeding (hemorrhage or hematoma)
  • blood clots
  • tissue death
  • delayed healing
  • anesthesia risks (including shock, respiratory failure, drug or allergic reactions, cardiac arrest, coma, death)
  • pneumonia
  • loss or change of sensation
  • paralysis or less severe nerve damage (http://plasticsurgery.about.com/od/historyofplasticsurgery/a/risks_rewards.htm)

  • Also what happens if you dont acheive the results you want,then your left with an irrevocable procedure and in most cases when you try to fix damged procedures it makes the problem worse.People should be happy with who they are and shouldn't change for shallow reasons.

    Her Perception doesn't Mean Deception

    Marriage is a commitment- a decision to do, all through life, that which will express your love for one's spouse." -Herman H. Kieval This is the true meaning of marriage and this is probably the meaning that most people assumed the essay Why I want a Wife would discuss. After reading the essay many minds came to the supposition that the essay suggest that marriage is a defunct institution. Honestly I would have to diverge with that conclusion due to the fact that the essay was written during the 1970’s which happens to be the same time the second wave of the feminist movement struck America. Meaning that the essay was written not to attack marriage but to explain how women were stereotyped during the time.

     During the 18th and 19th century is when the 3 waves of the feminist movement occurred. The first wave was about political equality and suffrage, the second wave was to improve social and cultural inequalities while the third fought for women to have a greater political influence. During these times women endured a great deal of inequality. They were over powered by men and looked down upon. They had very little rights and had to fight for the ones they have currently. Why wouldn’t you want an essay to be written to expose these conditions in hope to improve them?

    The essay highlights many of the stereotypes women faced then and now. It talks about how women were expected to stop their whole life for a man and work like a slave to please him. This is not how a marriage should be there isn’t any equality or love in the one Brady discusses. Many argue she wrote it that way because that’s her opinion on marriage, but  they tend to forget that it was wrote during a time where that is the type of environment she was exposed to so if that is the case she didn’t have any other choice but to think this way. People are missing the whole point of the essay thinking that way though, because the essay is meant to inform you about the inequalities that took place during that time, not to just bad mouth marriage and down men.

     I agree with Brady’s writing and I understand how she felt when she wrote it, because still to this day women aren’t completely free from the stereotypes they faced during the feminist movement, they are still expected to play the role of a slave with the title housewife. Men still expect women to bow down to them and respond to their every order just as it is stated. They want women to have no identity and to be a slave and a caretaker, while they live by double standards and do as they please.

    Brady’s essay was an informative essay about how women were treated during the feminist movement. Everything she wrote is true about the stereotypes women have shackled to them and since still to this day there are cultures where women are not treated equally, there should be more essays like Brady’s so people will know about the struggle and hopefully try to help better it .If people continue to simple mindedly analyze text like this one they will never see the true problem at hand and will never have a chance to be part of the solution.

    Art Beyond Education

    "....the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children's minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization, ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts." -National Standards for Arts Education

        School is a place where children find their identities, where they begin to mold as people and discover different parts of themselves. School is supposed to be a place that will make us well rounded once we exit it, but that is not the case if you attend a school that doesnt provide fine arts.Art enhances your development as a student and helps you understand the world and different cultures.There is research that shows studying art improves your success in other subjects.For example, in 2004, students who studied music scored 40 points higher on the math portion of the test verses students who didnt take art courses. The College Board reported that SAT scores are considerably higher for students involved in the fine arts, and that the fine arts are key to student success in college. Test scores, attendance, and college entry are higher, and drop-out rates are lower, in arts-centered schools in Texas.Art is incorporated in many other subjects for instance if you took a drama class you would deal with plays and in english class you study shakespear and other playwriters. Since the student took drama they have a better background and understanding of the play they are studying in english class. Art also helps stuents:
    • Understand human experiences, both past and present;
    • Adapt to and respect others' ways of thinking, working, and expressing themselves;
    • Learn artistic modes of problem solving, which bring an array of expressive, analytical, and developmental tools to every human situation;
    • Understand the influence of the arts, in their power to create and reflect cultures, in the impact of design on virtually all we use in daily life, and in the interdependence of work in the arts with the broader worlds of ideas and actions;
    • Make decisions in situations where there are no standard answers;
    • Analyze nonverbal communication and make informed judgments about cultural products and issues; and,
    • Communicate thoughts and feelings in a variety of modes, giving them a vastly more powerful repertoire of self-expression

    All together going to a school with fine arts gives you all these qualites and a better chance of succussion in life.

    Wealth Verses Health

    Have you noticed how different Kroger looks depending on the area or community you are in? I know I have. For example if you are to walk into the Kroger in my neighboorhood , the one by American Way you will notice the major difference compared to shopping at one in Collierville. Soon as you come in to the one by my house you are greeted with junk food and not the freshest produce. The store doesn't have a wide selection of organic food or vegetarian friendly food. It also doesn't look as nice as the one compared the in Collierville. When you step into the one in Collierville your greeted with more healthy choices of food and a nicer store apperence. It also includes a salad bar and a eye friendly bakery. All of this ties into my key point, the more money you have the easier it is for you to be healthly. I agree with this because the people in Collierville are more likly to have more money ,there for they are benefited with better and healthier food options.Also this is true because of the way food is priced and this really bothers me. How is it that you can get a 2 liter soda for 89c but you have to pay $1.49 for 120z of juice. If you have to budget it is harder to buy healthy choices when its cheaper to buy unhealthy ones. It also makes it harder to eat healthier when you aren't provided with healthy choices. All krogers should offer they same type of services no matter where you live. You shouldn't have to drive to the other side of town just to get fresh fruits and other produce. Sometimes I feel like the stores think just because we dont make the same income as other neighboorhoods that they can just give us anything and its supposed to be okay.
